For the next 365 days I will take a picture of myself. Each day/picture will have a part of my body in it. I am looking forward to this challenge and being able to see myself and body in a new light. I am hoping for grow as an artist and a person.

I paint self-portraits because I am the person I know best. -Frida Kahlo

A tattoo is a true poetic creation, and is always more than meets the eye.  As a tattoo is grounded on living skin, so its essence emotes a poignancy unique to the mortal human condition.  ~V. Vale and Andrea Juno, Modern Primitives

  1. Tell me about the birds?

    And the tree.

There are stories here. I wanna hear.

    :)

  2. The big red bird is a scarlet ibis. I got it after the short story of the same name. I first read it in 7th grade, and it really stuck with me my while life.

The tree is a tree of like. I got it after both of my girls were born. When it is done it will look like stained glass!

The little moon was my second tattoo, I got it with my good friend Dave, and didn't want to cover it up. So we worked it into the larger peice instead!

The little bird is a chocobo from Final Fantasy. I have cactuar on the other side. When I first met Nick we played all of FFX together (and anyone who has ever played knows how many hours that takes hah). He's got these matching tattoos as well :)

I've got 6 other tattoos that aren't shown in this picture!

  3. Wow.

I'm not familiar with the short story on the scarlet ibis, but have attempted to photograph them many times at the zoo. The aviary is indoors with difficult lighting, but they always grab me for more attempts.

I'm so glad you left the moon and incorporated it into what will surely be a phenomenal tree!

Thank you for sharing your stories with me. :)

  6. Thanks for the link, Heather. I can see why it stuck with you, not just for the heartbreaking tale but for the colorful descriptive storytelling.

Given the tale, I'm extra curious as to what your scarlet ibis represents for you. A kindness reminder? A reminder of how short and precious life is?

Thank you so much for sharing your heart.

  7. It is a reminder that we all have our strengths and not to look down on people who may seem "weak" (this could even be children) because they deserve our time and patience too. <3

  8. Yes.

The story also brings to mind for me the importance of receiving gifts wholeheartedly as they are, and not trying to change them into what we would have them be. Doing so causes the gifts to slip away and leaves us empty handed.

    Happy day, poetic one.
